Irwin Rumler has been actively involved in liquid fertilizer since 1962, beginning with Armour Agricultural Chemical Company in their research and development operation in Bartow, Florida. There he took part in developing processes for phosphate production. Also, phosphates were rendered into polyphosphates and ammoniated into liquid fertilizer base materials, such as 10-34-0, 12-40-0 and the like.

After U S Steel bought out Armour Irwin began field work in the design and erection of small liquid fertilizer plants with dealers throughout the United States, except for the far west. In doing this work he became knowledgeable in horticultural practices, application design as well as formulation of liquid fertilizers for use on specific crops.

When the research department was closed Irwin Rumler was assigned to the Florida sales department. There he built a liquid fertilizer plant, sold the products which he formulated on a custom basis for each of his customers requirements. His leadership in fertigation prompted his competitors to emulate him in their marketing strategy. Today every new citrus grove employs fertigation as the optimum horticultural practice. Leatherleaf growers still use the same fertigation program that he designed in 1971.

On April 1978 Irwin left USS Agrichemicals to build and operate a liquid fertilizer plant for Growers Fertilizer where he continued to lead the industry in liquid fertilizer promotion. He left a successful operation in January 1992 to devote his time and expertise to his own consulting business called AgTekneek.

The Florida Extension service and its several representatives have utilized Irwin Rumler in their grower meetings. His recommendations for fertilizer use have been incorporated in the Florida Bulletin for growing citrus.
